Tip from the December Meeting

January 3rd, 2010

At the December 21st meeting Ron Streicher demonstrated that in its
native form Apple’s Photo Booth application mirrors (inverts left-for-
right) the images it captures from either an iSight or external web
camera. He then showed how to correct this problem using a procedure
he found on-line. When you do this, first make a copy of the Photo
Booth application, rename it “corrected version” and then perform the
procedure as described in the following article.

November 2009 Meeting

As we look forward to the coming holidays, the November 16th  SGVMUG meeting will focus on ways you can use your computer to help you get through the season and have fun while doing it.To begin the meeting, Billy Chang will begin the meeting with a brief overview of the newest iMac computers released by Apple in mid-October.Next, Ron Streicher will conclude the presentation he began in October by showing how to interface your computer with your home entertainment systems.  The myriad of audio and video connectors and formats will be demystified, as will cures for some of the common “hum and buzz” problems that can occur when you try to hook it all up together. HeatShift™ Laptop Cooling Pad from ThermaPAKIn case you missed it, the September 21st meeting featured the HeatShift™ Laptop Cooling pad from ThermaPak, a local Pasadena company. Through the courtesy of Cindy Kang, Product Manager, three representatives of the company - Wayne Wang, Wei Wong, and David Blair – demonstrated this unique solution to the problem of heat dissipation for Macintosh Powerbook (and other) laptop computers.ThermaPAK also was kind enough to provide a HeatShift™  Pad for our drawing and offer a discount to any SGVMUG Members who wished to purchase one. Special Announcement!

Apple Releases OS X 10.6 “Snow Leopard” Early!Apple has announced that the new OS version 10.6, known as “Snow Leopard,” will be released on Friday, August 28th, about a month earlier than previously expected. Apple to release new cat early

Apple OS X 10.6

Apple Inc released a press release August 24th that Mac OS X 10.6 aka Snow Leopard will be available on Friday, August 28th. It had been stated at the 2009 WWDC that it would be available “in September” and this allows them to hit that target.

While implied previously, it was clearly stated that Snow Leopard would be intel only at the same Developers Conference. Pricing and requirements follow…

if you bought a new Mac AFTER June 9th and before December 26th, 2009 and you didn’t get 10.6 with your machine then you qualify for the Apple Up-to-Date program http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ which gets you Snow Leopard through the mail for $ 9.95.

Price for intel Leopard users -
$ 29 for single user license
$ 49 for family pack (up to five users in same household)

Snow Leopard is available to intel Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4) users through the Mac Box set only. The Mac Box Set includes Mac OS X 10.6, iLife 09, and iWork 09.
Price for intel Tiger users -
$ 169 for single user license
$ 229 for family pack (up to five users in same household)
